Day 4: 7/30: Hojby —> Mols Bjerge

Image
Well, we had quite the pleasant surprise for breakfast this morning, when I realized that our room came with a huge breakfast buffet. We had tentatively planned the night before to simply go to the grocery store and pick up a couple items before heading to the ferry, but then read online that it came complementary. The catch was that the ferry left at 10:10 (also luckily found out last night and bought tickets just in time) and we had a 14ish mile bike to get there. Breakfast didn’t start until 8. Based on our pace from day one, I figured we could leave as late as 8:30 and still be alright, so if we could get into breakfast even a little early, we’d probably be alright.       We did indeed pick up our plates at ~7:45ish and were treated to one of the best meals of the trip. Pastries, eggs, bacon, fruit, cheeses. Too many things to even sample all of and it was all delicious. I put myself right on the edge of pain and we set off for the ferry, beating the 8:30 m...

7/29: Day 3: Bike trip

Image
Up a bit earlier this morning for a run in Amager Faellen before heading off on a bike trip. I was actually planning on taking this day off, but Kate wanted to go, so I figured I might as well. Great dirt running again, followed by some pastries from a neighborhood bakery.      Picking up bikes with fairly smooth as the place opened at 10. It was busy though with people trying to rent for the day. It was smart to have booked ahead of time. Got our bikes and packed up at the apartment before heading to the train station. We were lucky enough to have our host willing to store luggage at the place while we were gone, so we were able to leave a good chunk of our stuff without having to pay extra at the train station.       The train ride to Roskilde was ~20 minutes or so. We had to book an extra spot for the bike, which on this leg at least ultimately meant we didn’t have anywhere to sit. Not the end of the world, but not amazing.     ...

7/28 Day 2: Copenhagen

Image
Slept off the rest of the jet-lag and enjoyed some coffee and muesli we had bought at the grocery store last evening. Didn't get going on the run until a little after 10, but with the nice weather, it was hardly a punishment. Set off across the canal to a series of parks on the fringe of Copenhagen proper: Amager Faelled and Kalvebod Faelled. Roamed a little through Amager before settling in along the path that parallels the canal. Kate was doing a workout, so it was the easiest to run a consistently faster pace on and easiest for us to meet up again as I just kept going out until I saw her turn around in the distance.      Cooled down back towards town and pit-stopped at a beach surrounded by apartment buildings at an inlet of the canal. Absolutely awesome to dunk under.      Had a light lunch with some more grocery food before setting off towards the City Center for a canal tour by boat. The tour was roughly an hour with a charismatic tour-guide tha...

7/27: Day 1: Arriving to Copenhagen

Image
Well- we successfully completed another transatlantic journey over to Europe. There's so much to worry about flying these days with delays, baggage, etc, but all in all, it was a smooth flight. The leg to Paris was ~7.5 hours and not exactly pleasant, but passed fairly quickly. I did a little nap, a fair amount of reading, eating dinner, breakfast, and then getting whipped by the computer in chess.      Navigating Charles De Gaulle wasn't exactly exciting, but we made due and got to our gate with tine to spare, if surprisingly little given the amount we started with when we arrived. Another short(ish) ride to Copenhagen (just under 2 hrs) and we (thankfully) grabbed Kate's bag at the luggage carousel and were on our way. I was indeed able to purchase extra data when we landed, so walking out the door, I could map transit to our Airbnb. So much has changed even since when I started traveling internationally, much less 30 years ago.      That said- it h...
