7/28 Day 2: Copenhagen

Slept off the rest of the jet-lag and enjoyed some coffee and muesli we had bought at the grocery store last evening. Didn't get going on the run until a little after 10, but with the nice weather, it was hardly a punishment. Set off across the canal to a series of parks on the fringe of Copenhagen proper: Amager Faelled and Kalvebod Faelled. Roamed a little through Amager before settling in along the path that parallels the canal. Kate was doing a workout, so it was the easiest to run a consistently faster pace on and easiest for us to meet up again as I just kept going out until I saw her turn around in the distance.

Cooled down back towards town and pit-stopped at a beach surrounded by apartment buildings at an inlet of the canal. Absolutely awesome to dunk under.

Had a light lunch with some more grocery food before setting off towards the City Center for a canal tour by boat. The tour was roughly an hour with a charismatic tour-guide that hardly broke for breath as he rattled off random facts about different buildings and areas we passed. Actually a really cool way to take in the city.

We meandered around thereafter, coming up short at a few potential stops. First was a bar in the middle of a bridge (it was super small and all the reservations had been snapped up for the evening). Next was the Danish National History museum (Kate had read it was free, but it was not, so we decided to pass). Then- another museum that cost money, but you could bundle it with some apps and beers on a roof-top bar, but those tickets were also sold out for the evening. We ended up finding a bar along the canal and had a drink and some apps soaking in the sun and people watching. Honestly probably just as good as going to a museum for a similar amount of time.

Walked through Christianshavn en route to "freetown" Christiania which is self-proclaimed as an autonomous region within the city. It was settled by "hippies" in the 60's and 70's and eventually the city ceded it to an extent. It kind of functions as a red-light district or Amsterdam where open market weed is legal and probably a lot of other stuff too. There's a bunch of hovels and winding streets and a lot of hippie type people walking around and/or partaking in the drug trade. Pretty interesting to soak in.

There was also a jazz club there we were hoping to head to and they even had live music that night, but we decided to skip it after dinner and head home instead, knowing we'd be up a bit earlier tomorrow.

Dinner was at the "Reffen" food truck venue with tons of different food trucks and fare from around the world. Packed with people and right on the water, it was a sweet spot. Kate ended up with some kind of African cuisine and I had Afghan. It was another unique and cheap food night on the town.

Rented city bikes to get back to our Airbnb, missing the 30 min cutoff by a hair.

Another great day in the city.
